How to Tune a Guitar (Electric or Acoustic)

In this article I will instruct you on how to tune your guitar. First let's go over the strings and their names. The top or thickest is the E string. The next string looking and moving down is the A. Next is the D, followed by the G. Continue moving down to the B and finally the high E string.
Here is a simple phrase commonly used to help remember their names.
"Eddie Ate Dynamite Good Bye Eddie"
The first letter of each word represents each string.
The first thing we need to do to tune a guitar is to get one string in tune. I recommend the tuning the A or the low E first. You may use a piano, pitch pipe, electronic tuner or almost any other instrument to tune the A or E-string from a known correctly tuned source. For this lesson let us assume that we have tuned our E-string to a pitch pipe. Now that you know the E is in tune we will tune the A-string. Fret the E-string on the fifth fret. You are now playing an A. Pick both the E-string and A-string and adjust the tuning peg for the A-string until both sound the same. Once satisfied with pitch of the A Fret the A-string at the fifth fret. You are now playing a D so we can now tune the D-String. Pick both the A and D-strings and adjust the tuning peg for the D-string until both produce the same note. Now it's time to move on to tuning the G. Fret the D-string on the fifth Fret. You are now playing a G so we can now tune the G-string. Pick both the D and G-strings and adjust the tuning peg for the G until both strings produce the same note. Next tune the B-string. You will need to fret the fourth fret of the G-string to play a B. Fret the fourth fret of your guitars G-string and pick both the G and B-strings. Adjust the tuning peg for the B until both are in tune. Finally it's time to tune the high E. Fret the B-string at the fifth fret. You are now playing an E. Pick both the B and high E-strings. Adjust the tuning peg for the high E until both the B and E-strings sound the same.
Play a major chord that your ear is familiar with. The guitar should sound in tune. The guitar should at this point at the least be in tune with itself. With some time your ear should improve and you will be more aware when you guitar is in tune or in need of tuning.
